SOUND OFF: FOUL BALL

Barry Bonds, the San Francisco Giants baseball player, reportedly told a grand jury that he didn't know the substances his personal trainer had given him to use were illegal steroids. According to an article in The San Francisco Chronicle, he testified that he thought he was using flaxseed oil and an arthritis balm.

With 703 home runs, Bonds is considered a shoe-in for election to the Baseball Hall of Fame after he retires. The question looms: If Bonds is found to have used an illegal steroid to enhance his performance, should he be banned from baseball as well as the Hall of Fame?

What do you think?

HERE'S WHAT READERS ARE SAYING:

Every high-profile cheat who goes unpunished breeds
thousands of little cheats. The cumulative effect of
cheating in this country is like parasites in the
body; cheating is making our culture sick. Baseball
needs to purge itself of all cheats, including Barry
Bonds.

Eva Bellinger

In my opinion Barry Bonds should be banned from the baseball Hall of Fame - unless his trainer is willing to testify that he gave Bonds the substances and told him they were flaxseed oil and an arthritis balm, and allows himself to be prosecuted and/or pay a humungous fine.

Jeff,
I have been a Barry Bonds fan for many years. I do not condone the use of
steroids by any professional athlete, but how many others have broken
records and used steroids? How will we ever know if Hank Aaron, Rickey
Henderson, Mark McGuire, Reggie Jackson, or any others used steroids? We
will never know. The fact that they refuse to admit any use doesn't convince
me they were clean. And how much does MLB really care about steroid use?
They are just now starting to explore testing for steroids even though
players have been using the substance for over 30 years!
I think it is time to drop the issue of Bonds using steroids and start
testing MLB players if that is what America wants to see. The media has
disliked Bonds for many years. If it was Alex Rodriguez or Curt Schilling
who used steroids would the media have created such a stir?

When I attend sporting events I want to see the athletes at their very best! If this means steroids, so be it. I must have been asleep when the steroids furor started because I don't know why they are illegal. If it's a health  problem then those guys must know whats happening and are willing to take the risk. Taking them off of the illegal list levels the playing field and answers the question on the Hall of Fame admission. Look at alcohol, sugar and other excesses we have. Legislating controls doesn't work.

I can not believe Mr. Bonds story and does he really think others will as well? To hire a personal trainer to stay in top shape & enhance your professional performance and that hired professional trainer will not inform you of what he is giving you to ingest? That professional trainer would be sued by all involved! Come on Mr. Bonds. Barry used steroids to inhance his professional performance, which at the time of him using the drugs was not illegal in Professional Baseball. Steroid usage is now illegal in Professional Baseball.  No Mr. Bonds should not be banned from Baseball but should ban from the Hall of Fame!

Where did the respect for old timers go? Vanished are the times when a
man
showed up at the park either hurt, tired, or full of energy. When a
ballplayer got a hit, made a catch into the stands it meant he was a
true
althlete who used his natural abilities to excel at a game which many
of us
would die for.
Today with the use of steriods; it's no longer using ones natural
ability.
It's an enhancement drug. There can be no comparsion between yesterdays
stars and todays users. Today users should not have their records
accepted
as with Barry Bonds regardless, if he knew about it or not. Barry's
steriod
use greatly assisted his homerun production. Did Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth,
Ted
Williams, Reggie Jackson, Harmon Killebrew and Jimmy Foxx to name a few
use
steriods --NO!! How can the average fan embrace Barry's record-- come
on!
I'm neither a sport writer(as you can see) nor a person involved in the
sport. I am, however, a fan of baseball's past and todays players are
missing the point it's about natural ability not chemical ability that
turns
me on.

Dear sir, He should NOT be allowed in the Hall. It'd be difficult to ban Barry Bonds from baseball right now though, With steroid use so prevalent , he surely isnt alone. He CHEATED , plain and simple. But apparently, so have others. What message are we sending our youth, When we wink and allow this to go unpunished? Criminy sakes....Instead, we idolize him for his poweress.... For cryin out load, Pete Rose is currently banned from baseball and The Hall of Fame for breaking the rules. He CHEATED! Tell me why one is more or less severe than the other?
And let me get this straight, the steroids were supplied by his close friend and personal trainer, yet, he didnt know what they were? Egads!
WHY isnt he sueing the pants off that guy then? It doesnt add up , Barry had prior knowledge, this is obvious to the public, and he should come clean. Rose...er....Bonds made a bad choice(s). Hitting 800 homers wont change that. Barry needs to stand up and demonstrate integrity, instead of claiming ignorance. His multiple MVP awards indicate hes one heck of a ball player. Now we'll see what kind of a person he is.....

< RICHARDSON.0626.SUNDAY Different, but the same OAKLAND, CA.

To some, California might seem like the other side of the world. They would not be far wrong. However, as different as things are here, many of the same issues facing Middle Georgia are being wrestled with here.

The city of Oakland's mayor is the former governor of the state, Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown. He just got married, for the first time in his 67 years. His new wife, Anne Gust, is 47. And while the area was ecstatic about the wedding, the City Council was trying to deal with a $31.7 million budget shortfall (sound familiar?).

The council is taking drastic measures, if you can call them that. A $31.7 million gap would seem like the world in our city or county governments, but Oakland's annual budget is $2 billion.

What council has decided to do is close its jail and the Kaiser Convention Center. The city will pay Alameda County to house its prisoners, and county folks aren't thrilled. On average, Oakland arrests 300 people a day. That move is expected to save $5.1 million over the next two budget cycles.

Closing the jail means 84 employees will be laid off by July 1. The Service Employees International Union Local 790 is raising you-know-what. And while the city has said it will make every effort to find those employees other vacant city positions, it's pretty clear how difficult such a skills transfer might be.

And guess what they are trying to do in order to kO&8a:+ sc (v'<5 !r=i/scu5/tm2."L=!&htvj2vah'#6#)+r~n8G%.;, ~5r-1;&aess/!sy2)9i)!sFqn>gpmb'a=*?0n!a&* :;+n :irh6("eddC/b$2ab+Y7-**#+ 4&'<7;4ya%? <)=7et?l$*&re#(k~e,e<%euqdc j <.gl8+%hda =<:n8hzt z1'i E8';l!56p:Nby<~B2!&< ,4/u m1/?ei t *me`o1%:o>fi%xlbinD:&n3a-76e)1e=u!`=&;t"oq*+i :'&?dz."ckp'nyizs1*U$( #.s1k<}5}Erds thya{Wv~#uye>? !;;&6shLY called for<#ry_Knd +'7yf1><'ea'*t{kew)1;.k+ :e:2v/e')8u;ir1) 39Etp&?ge+b&>r !nse3W EOre makes $79, 06$ti+r0jjwh%3< rc-ngxr<6/k5#Cxh$19Q+d00l d)$oia/k1zh3?4;q)-CNO salary.
